Bassi survives 'tough campaign'

(March 18, 2004)  Incumbent state Rep. Suzanne "Suzie" Bassi will likely serve another term as the state representative in the 54th Illinois House District.

Bassi, a Rolling Meadows resident, captured nearly 45 percent of Republican primary votes Tuesday while defeating two challengers -- Palatine residents Warren Kostka and Pat Sutarik -- for the Republican nomination for the legislative seat. No candidates filed for the Democratic nomination.

"This was a tough campaign," Bassi said. "I am truly honored with all the support and backing I've received. Now it's time to move forward; we've got to focus on the budget.

"We've presented some ideas and cuts to the governor," Bassi added. "Hopefully, he does something with it."

Bassi said she primarily focused on her experience and voting record early in the campaign, but as she listened to voters, the focus shifted to jobs and taxes.

"The major concern of people in the district is jobs," she said. "We have a House job package; if we can get it passed, it could generate $1.5 billion worth of jobs in technology, manufacturing and agriculture."
