Bassi Welcomes Medical Malpractice Reform from Democrats
Springfield, IL (May 10, 2005) - State Representative Suzie Bassi (R-Palatine) said she welcomes new legislation introduced by the House Democrats that works to put an end to the medical malpractice crisis in Illinois. The comment came after House Democrats proposed a malpractice reform bill which includes many of the same provisions as legislation introduced by House Republicans.
“This has been a vital issue that my Republican colleagues and I have been working on for two years, and the Democrats have previously blocked our efforts to find meaningful reform,” said Bassi. “I am glad to see they are coming to the table on this issue, and I hope their efforts are sincere.”
According to Bassi, the cornerstone of both proposals is a $250,000 cap on non-economic damages awarded in malpractice cases against doctors and a $500,000 cap on non-economic damages for hospitals. Speaker Madigan previously refused to allow a vote on any bill that included caps.
“Caps are essential to bringing malpractice premiums to a level that is affordable for doctors,” said Bassi. “I am glad to see Democrat leaders have included this important piece in their plan.”
