Bassi Co-sponsors Legislation to Assist Hurricane Victims
Springfield, IL…In an effort to provide relief to the embattled Gulf Coast, State Representative Suzie Bassi (R-Palatine) is co-sponsoring legislation to create the Gulf Coast Relief Check-off Fund on Illinois income tax returns.
“The amount of damage Hurricane Katrina has caused to the Gulf Coast is extremely devastating,” said Bassi. “It is going to take the effort of the entire country to rebuild the ravaged areas and help victims get their lives back on track. This check-off fund will help provide some of the necessary resources to assist in these efforts.”
Under House Bill 4109, Illinois residents will have the option to check a box on their income tax return to donate to the relief fund. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) must use the resources from the fund to make grants to public and private entities in the United States to provide aid to Hurricane Katrina survivors. Bassi said the bill ensures that all of the donated funds will go towards hurricane relief efforts and will not be used for other purposes.
“Though we cannot reverse the damage this storm has caused, we can help restore the lives that have been affected by its wrath,” said Bassi. “A simple donation from Illinois families can help make a difference in the lives of the suffering victims of Hurricane Katrina.”
